Cruise ship weddings have become an increasingly popular way to tie the knot in recent years. There are a number of intriguing and unique destinations for weddings in ports-of-call, which can take your wedding from wonderful to fabulous. That being said, there are a number of factors to consider, when choosing your cruise wedding destination. That’s why I’ve put together a list of three of the most interesting cruise wedding destinations available. Can you visualize yourself exchanging vows during a cruise to the Hawaiian Islands, or on a beach in Grand Cayman? Read on and start dreaming of your cruise wedding.
Catalina Island, California
Just off the coast of California, this beautiful island is filled with vibrant scenery and some incredible wildlife. Wedding vendors on the island are well-versed in the mechanics of a port wedding, meaning they have handled the ins and outs of the ceremony many times, and have experience dealing with any problem that may arise. A few points to consider:
- This small island is usually booked almost a year out for popular weekends with large events.
- The wedding will most likely take place in the main town, Avalon.
- But, since the town is so small, many hotels on the island don’t have banquet facilities for large groups, so plan accordingly.
- You will need to apply for a California marriage license, since Catalina Island is a part of California.
Check with your travel agent to ascertain if the cruise line will assist you with this.
Maui, Hawaii
The Valley Isle is an unbelievable place to tie the knot. The wedding festivities can be extra-special with the gentle and soothing Hawaiian breeze, and the crystal clear waters of the Pacific just a step away. Don’t forget about the floral options (bountiful, to say the least) and unique cuisine you can find in the islands. A few points:
- Consider whether you would like a ceremony on the white-sand beaches of the West Coast of the island, a lush tropical clearing, or in a historic church, all of which are possible.
- Many cruise lines will help couples obtain wedding licenses, but in Hawaii, there’s no hassle of a waiting period, so couples can dock, obtain a license, experience a luxurious Hawaiian marriage, and be back on the ship by embarkation.
- It’s pretty easy to find some hula dancers and local music arrangements for your ceremony.
Grand Cayman, British West Indies
When it comes to cruise destination weddings, Grand Cayman is one of the finest and most popular choices. You can choose everything from a secluded cove wedding on the coast to a larger, gorgeous church wedding, while reveling in the marvelous Caribbean atmosphere. Although historically a bit more expensive, the exotic cuisine, local wedding officiants, and surrounding ports (don’t forget, you’re still on a cruise!) make this destination more than worth it. A few points to consider:
- The marriage license fee is higher than most other destinations ($375.00).
- Make sure you choose a date outside of hurricane season for your wedding. The hurricane season is June-November, and is always monitored closely by cruise lines and news outlets.
- The islands have their own currency (Cayman Islands Dollar), which means there is an exchange rate. CI$1.00=US$1.25.
As you can see, a cruise destination wedding is truly a unique wedding option. Added benefit: you can accommodate all of your loved ones and won’t have to worry about transfers, rooms, and all the wedding accoutrements.
