BASH magazine is the latest wedding magazine to hit the shelves. When I saw it sitting there amongst the usual tried and tested wedding magazines it stood out to me with its striking cover that promoted the sheer beauty and innocence of a bride. With pretty fonts and delicate colours it looked like the best wedding magazine that Irish magazine shelves had to offer. BASH is created by Image magazine so I was very hopeful that it was going to offer quality inspiration, fantastic images and some great articles. I got to work on reading the magazine from front to back noting the good and the bad points and if the styling and images were inspiring. The magazine covers a lot of topics from wedding treats, bridesmaids dresses, unique hen destinations and gift ideas to name but a few. There are DIY tips, savvy suggestions for alternate wedding venues and news on current wedding trends. They feature a 'win your wedding' competition with prizes from top suppliers, this is very appealing to the public where in this day and age some bride's just can't afford what they would ideally desire for their big day!
The magazines encompasses three photo shoots designed to inspire the bride for her own wedding day. The themes being 'crumbled beauty', 'Love me tender' and 'rustic wedding decor'. The photographs are stunningly beautiful capturing natural stances and wonderfully designed décor. The section on 'featured weddings' also carries through the clever photography and important detailing. These shoots look great, read well but I still found them a little distant from the modern day 'real' bride'. I consulted a friend, who is to be married this year and who adores buys wedding magazines and asked her how she related to these articles which are meant to be inspiring for the bride. She felt they were two highly stylised and hard to relate to. I agree with her and think that this type of 'look' would only relate to a small number of bride's. It is important to cover all styles and relate to different personality types and I feel BASH doesn't take into account.
However, there were a few articles I really enjoyed when we stepped into a more general wedding realm. The 'Capturing the Moment' feature asking photographers about what they like to get a sense of on the day and how couples should work on being more comfortable around the camera to produce the more natural shots was excellent and very insightful. 'Practical tips to Wedfest' that spoke about the run up to the wedding and what to spend your time and energy organising was helpful and offered great advice. 'Healthily Ever After', an article focused on the dieting involved coming up to the wedding was one of the best articles as it is something that every bride worries about to a high extent, this offers tips on great foods to eat to look your best and why you should avoid crash dieting.
Overall, the magazine excudes beauty, professionalism, organisation and articles cover a range of topics important to the bride. There are a huge number of advertisements however this seems prominent amongst most wedding magazines. As I work in the wedding industry I like to look at this publication as a whole and there are downfalls as most things do have. This is only the first issue so you have to allow some leeway. My criticism lies in the lack of relation to the every day bride who doesn't have a massive budget or hugely creative flair. The 'alternate' inspiration isn't for everybody and this needs to be considered with a magazine that is meant to cater for the entire wedding community. I would recommend buying it and trying it out yourself as it is pretty and delicate and styling is all about a matter of taste so this may be exactly what you are looking for!
